The HSC Full Form is “Higher Secondary Certificate”.
HSC is also known as Class 12. HSC is a type of course that is given as a certificate to a student on completion of Secondary Education or 12th standard in India. After passing the HSC exam, students are given a certificate of HSC on the basis of performance grade or percentage in the exam. Since the year 1989, all the states of India have been converted into a 12-year (standard) primary/secondary cycle. After two years of Senior Secondary School, students are re-examined by their school’s affiliated board and, upon success, are awarded the Higher Secondary (School) Certificate (HSC). There are also exams administered internally by individual secondary schools at the end of the eleventh grade.
There are a total of 47 state examination boards and three national boards. The syllabus for Higher Secondary Certificate Examination (HSC) is also prescribed by these 47 state boards and 3 national boards.
Students who pass HSC are eligible for university admission, although some selected colleges or universities require separate entrance examinations. A score of at least 80% in the HSC from state boards of education may meet the entry requirements, provided an appropriate standard of English has been attained.
Students with a high score (75%) from the CBSE and CISCE boards can meet the entry requirements, provided an appropriate standard of English has been attained. Admission to professional programs (engineering, architecture, medicine, etc.) is through the competitive state- or national-level entrance examinations. These include the Joint Entrance Examination (Indian Institute of Technology), All India Pre-Medical / Pre-Dental Examination, and All India Engineering Entrance Examination. Some universities in India are converting their three-year programs to four-year degrees (mimicking the US model), which may lead to an adjustment of admission criteria, e.g. Delhi University.
